About ESE

Equal Student Exchange (ESE) is a volunteer-based student network which provides free information about student exchange and study overseas opportunities.

Focusing on providing information to students from developing countries, ESE acknowledges the financial and organisational obstacles these students must often come to face. It is the belief of ESE that both universities and students can benefit through international engagement. A more culturally diverse range of international students will contribute to the continued exchange of knowledge, ideas and culture between different universities and countries.

The volunteers of ESE recognize the importance of establishing enduring educational, cultural and professional links through student exchange.

Fullbright - Foreign Student Programs

As part of our series of articles on Fullbright Programs such as the Fullbright English Teaching Program for Indonesian ESL teachers, we would also like to provide more general information for students from other developing countries.

This general information will soon be followed up with an article detailing the experiences of Fullbright alumni to provide insights into the program application process and the study experience itself.

Below we provide additional information about the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) - for a range of different countries.

Eligibility
All Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) program applicants must be nominated by a U.S. Embassy or a Fulbright Commission; independent applicants do not qualify.  You are eligible to participate in the Fulbright FLTA program if you:
  • Reside in the country of nomination at the time of application
  • Possess the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor's degree with a good academic record; Master's degrees are highly desirable at many institutions
  • Are a young teacher of English or training to become a teacher of English, or are a young educator in a related field; prior teaching experience is preferred
  • Have a sincere interest in teaching your native language and culture to students in the U.S.
  • Are fluent in English, as demonstrated by a recent score of no less than 550 (Paper Based TOEFL), 79-80 (Internet Based TOEFL - IBT), or 6.0 (Overall Score International English Language Testing System - IELTS); test scores can be submitted to IIE by indicating the institutional code 2326 on the day of the test
  • Are able to work creatively and be self-reliant while being willing to work cooperatively as part of a team with faculty, staff and students
  • Are flexible and have a willingness to learn
  • Are adaptable to living in rural or urban areas
  • Clearly demonstrate maturity, dependability, integrity and professionalism
  • Do not hold U.S. citizenship; dual citizens are not eligible for the program participation

Applying and Program Design
If selected for participation in the Fulbright FLTA Program, you will have the opportunity to spend one academic year sharing your culture and language with American students by supporting an existing language program or helping to establish a new one on a U.S. university or college campus. FLTA duties vary widely from institution to institution – some FLTAs are expected to teach language courses on their own with minimal in-class supervision, while others may be much more involved in extracurricular support of established language programs such as leading conversation groups, participating in community events or lectures, working in language laboratories, or contributing to language materials development.
In addition to duties as a teaching assistant, all FLTAs are required to participate in coursework. This provides an opportunity to increase your understanding of topics related to your personal and professional goals, increase your English proficiency, as well as allowing you the opportunity to benefit from the cultural exchange inherent in sharing ideas with American students within a classroom setting.
The Fulbright FLTA grant is one academic year (approximately 9-10 month) non-renewable opportunity. The program is non-degree; if you are interested in a degree-seeking program, you are encouraged to explore the Fulbright Foreign Student Program.
As a Fulbright FLTA, you would be able to engage in a meaningful cultural exchange opportunity on a U.S. university or college campus, while at the same time deepening your pedagogical skills, increasing your English proficiency, and promoting mutual understanding through engaging with American students and getting involved in local communities. At the conclusion of your program, you will be expected to return to your home community, making an immediate impact by utilizing the skills gained and sharing the experiences gleaned from your time in the U.S.
If you believe that you would be a good fit for the FLTA program, we encourage you to apply here. Prior to making an application, please be sure to notify the Fulbright FLTA Program affiliate in your home country. Here is a list of participating countries, along with contact information.

Asia Pacific Week - Australian National University

Applications for Asia Pacific Week 2014 are now open!
Asia Pacific Week 2014 aims to explore the theme of ‘GlobaliseAsian’ and will examine significant and controversial issues facing the region through interactive and challenging sessions.

The conference will give delegates the opportunity to experience the Australian National University’s expertise in the study of the Asia-Pacific and network with the next generation of Asia Pacific specialists.
We invite all interest applicants to submit their application.
Applications close on April 6 2014.

About the Conference
Asia Pacific Week 2014 will be the fourth conference of its kind hosted by The Australian National University and will explore the theme of 'GlobaliseAsian'.
Today, there is a common assumption in the developed world that as countries modernise, they become more Westernised. However, this suggests that modernity is simply a product of ideas, systems and technology originating in the ‘West’. Instead of an era of globalisation, we are entering a time of ‘GlobaliseAsian’.
Asia and the Pacific’s remarkable rise and economic development means that it is set to make its mark on the world. But is the world ready for a world shaped by it? What this world may look like and how the world can benefit from the Asia-Pacific region is the focus of Asia Pacific Week 2014 (APW2014).

Conference Program
The conference program for APW2014 will be released in due time. Stay tuned to the website through this link for more information and the newest updates.

2014 Equal Student Exchange (ESE) Fair

On the 20th-22nd of March 2014, Eastern Indonesia hosted its first International Education and Culture Fair. This event was held in Kupang, in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT).

The first two days promoted international study and scholarship opportunities to students throughout the province. This was met with a great deal of interest; especially as information rarely reaches the more disadvantaged parts of developing countries but is more often captured by elites.

The third day was all about international culture. This featured a number of cultural performances showcasing traditional culture from NTT. There were also performances from bands who had come from overseas such as B2M (an indeigenous Australian band).

STUDY IN POLAND

This month Equal Student Exchange (ESE) takes its readers Poland. As we aim to provide information to students from developing countries, this article will be one of the first of many to be written by students from developing countries.

The author of this specific article first learned about overseas study opportunities and scholarships through Equal Student Exchange (ESE) back in 2012. With this information, she was able to gain the opportunity to study at Uniwersytet Warszawski (the University of Warsaw) in Poland for 6 months in 2013 through an Erasmus Mundus sponsored program. Through this article she now contributes back to the ESE community by sharing her experience in Central Europe. As a result, we can now explore the many opportunities available for students from developing countries hoping to study in Poland.

WHY STUDY IN POLAND?
Since joining the EU in 2004, Poland has assumed an increasingly influential role in the region. This has been demonstrated by the appointment of the Polish Presidency of the European Union Council in the second half of 2011. The World Bank documented Poland as the country with the fastest growing economy in the European region for several years. Poland has since become the largest economy in the Central Europe. With a population of about more than 38 million and a per capita income of $12,660 in 2012, Poland presents a rapidly emerging economy with a wide range of opportunities.

As a country which has been shaped by the trials and conflict of history, through its resilience Poland has now emerged as one of the big players in Europe. This certainly raises great interest to explore and study in the country. A range of options for study can be found in the rapidly developing main Polish city centres. Many of these cities while assuming an increasingly Western European metropolitanism, still manage to maintain a distinctive Central European character.

Studying in Poland provides a unique opportunity and experience that differs with experiences likely to be gained in other European countries. Poland’s high quality tertiary education sector is based on more than 650 years of experience. Various Poles graduating from this educational system have gone on to establish their place in the history of science and art: some examples, among others include Nicholas Copernicus, Frederic Chopin, and Marie Currie. Today Polish universities continue the traditions of their predecessors while adapting to a modern and often technology oriented modern world. Warsaw University for example is ranked first in the Top Coder international IT ranking.

In terms of living costs for students, living in Poland is considerably affordable when compared with living costs in Western Europe even with the same quality of life. The cost of entertainment and tickets to cultural events are also much lower than the EU average. Poland’s growing popularity as study destination has attracted about 25,000 (and rapidly rising) international students from more than a hundred countries around the globe. In terms of security, Poland provides a relatively safe place for international students of all races, beliefs and origins.

For those who also seek adventures and cultural experiences, Poland should not be overlooked. With the serenity of natural landscapes throughout the country, many historical sites, and cultural events throughout the year, Poland provides a wide range of possibilities. As an increasingly popular destination for study, there will also be the chance to meet many new friends from around the world to share the experience with.

POLISH EDUCATION SYSTEM
Since the 2007/2008 academic year, the Polish higher education system has been divided into three stages: Bachelor (Licencjat, Inżynier), Master (Magister), and Doctor (Doktor). This system applies to all fields of education except Law, Pharmacy, Psychology, Veterinary Medicine, Medicine and Dentistry, which are still based on two-stage system (Master and Doctor).

Bachelor (BA, Licencjat). Obtained following the completion of 3-3,5 year-long vocational/technical college studies.
Bachelor (BSc, Inżynier) Obtained following the completion of 3,5-4 year-long college studies in technical sciences, agriculture and economy.
Master (MA, MSc, Magister) Equivalent degrees: Master of Art, Master Engineer, Master Engineer Architect, qualified physician, dental surgeon or veterinarian. Granted following the completion of 5-6 year long uniform university studies. The MSc may also be obtained following the completion of 2-2,5 years-long supplementary master's degree studies which may be taken by persons with a college diploma.
Doktor (PhD, Doktor) A degree awarded to those who pass doctoral exam and successfully defend dissertation. To qualify for the academic degree of doctor one must hold a master or equivalent degree.

Enrollment requirements

The requirements depend on a specific university decision, and should be verified on a website of the university of your choice. Usually it's necessary to fill an application form, and enclose the transcript of secondary school (or college/university) results as well as the evidence of English proficiency (usually TOEFL results). Some universities require letters of recommendation, personal essays and other documents, listed on their websites. Art schools, as well as some physical education departments, and few other ones, organize additional aptitude tests.
In general, the requirements for international students applying for universities in Poland are as follows:

        - Notarized secondary school certificate or an official duplicate issued by the candidate's high school,
        - Filled out application form,

Admission Information for MA (Master) candidates:

        - Proof of English language proficiency (unless the first degree was taught in English),

Notarized secondary school certificate or an official duplicate issued by the candidate's high school (when applying for master program),

        and other documentation*
*since some universities have additional various admission requirements, it is advisable to contact selected University prior to submission of your application!
Important Note: In case a candidate requires a visa to stay and study on the territory of European Union, he or she should apply for selected program adequately earlier, so that decision concerning visa issuance is made before the fall/spring semester begins.

The academic year

The academic year is divided into two parts: the fall semester (October-mid February), and the spring semester (mid February-June). Each of them ends with the examination period. Teaching is given in the form of lectures, classes, seminars, laboratory classes and discussion groups.

Tuition Fees

In Poland full-time education at state institutions of higher education is free for Polish citizens. It is also free for foreigners who commence studies in at state HEIs on terms applicable to Polish citizens. All other foreigners are required to pay tuition fees of no less than a PLN equivalent of:
        EUR 2000 per year for professional higher study, master’s and postgraduate master’s courses;
        EUR 3000 per year for doctoral, postgraduate and specialist courses and scientific, artistic, specialist and habilitation internships;

EUR 2000 per year for a language course, including a course preparing for study in Polish.

Polish system in European higher education area

Poland has signed the Bologna Declaration along with 29 other countries, aiming to create the European Area of Higher Education. Institutions of higher education in Poland have implemented the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). They are also engaged in the international exchange of students, based on individual schools activity and programs like SOCRATES/Erasmus. The Diploma Supplement facilitates international recognition of completed education and acquired qualifications.
